León, Spain

León Spain

León is a charming small town in the north of Spain, in the Castilla y León region. Symbolised by images of lions, the town takes great pride in its historical heritage, and the city still likes to remind the world that it had 24 kings before Castile even had laws. Although this bright, airy city reached its peak in the 11th century, it remains remarkably attractive. The Plaza Mayor, with its graceful arcades and cafés, is the perfect starting point for exploring León’s old centre. The standout sights are the colossal Cathedral, a 13th‑century Gothic masterpiece with magnificent stained-glass windows, and the Basilica of San Isidoro, whose royal pantheon has vaults adorned with perfectly preserved Romanesque frescoes. With its broad avenues and open spaces, pedestrian areas and the River Bernesga providing shaded walks along its banks, León is truly a beautiful city.
