Nevşehir Turcaí

Formerly known as Nyssa, and later Muskara in the 18th century, Nevşehir – the “new city” – has long been recognised for its spiritual character and its love of the arts during the “Tulip Era”. Until the 18th century, Nevşehir was a small Anatolian town whose fate changed thanks to İbrahim Pasha, who was born here and rose to become Grand Vizier. After the death of Damat İbrahim Pasha in 1730, the city did not lose its importance; following the end of the Ottoman period and the founding of the Republic, it became the capital of the province that bears its name. This beautiful town is marked out by the fortress crowning the hill and watching over the city. Built in the Seljuk period, it is the oldest building in Nevşehir. The külliye is a complex comprising the fortress, a mosque, a library, a theological school, a hamam, an imaret (public hostel and soup kitchen) and a primary school.
