Sassari is an Italian city and the second-largest on the island of Sardinia. One of the oldest cities on the island, it has an extensive collection of art. As Sardinia’s second most populated city, and the fifth largest municipality in Italy, it plays an important cultural, touristic, commercial and political role on the island. MAIN TOURIST ATTRACTIONS • Archaeological site of Monte d'Accoddi: a unique prehistoric monument built as a step pyramid. • The Pisan City Walls, which in the 13th century surrounded the city with 36 towers, and the Catalan-Aragonese castle known as Castello di Sassari. • The Church of St Peter in Silki. • Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the main street of the medieval town. • The Cathedral of St Nicholas of Bari. • The Rosello Fountain, built in 1606 by Genoese craftsmen. • The University Palace. • The Ducal Palace.
