Udine, Italy

Udine Italy

Udine is a calm and elegant provincial capital, and the unofficial capital of Friuli, which forms most of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps. The province of Udine offers a varied landscape that includes the sandy shores of the lagoon, cultivated lowlands, and the Alpine foothills: the Forni Dolomites, the Carnic Alps, and the Julian Alps. Around a graceful Renaissance-style square stand some of Udine’s most attractive buildings. You can visit the Loggia del Lionello (the former town hall, named after its architect), built in 1456, and the 16th-century Loggia di San Giovanni, which faces it from a slightly higher level and features a Renaissance arcade topped by a clock tower. Piazza Matteotti is a charming square where the local market is held. It is surrounded by arcaded houses, with a 16th-century fountain at its center and a 15th-century column dedicated to the Virgin.
