Girona Spain

Girona is one of the largest towns in Catalonia, surrounded by defensive walls and the Río Onyar. It is located in the north of the region and serves as the capital of Girona Province, which includes the stunning Costa Brava. This ancient city is both medieval and cosmopolitan, with a well-preserved Old Town full of trendy bars and chic shops. The town boasts an attractive Jewish quarter, an impressive cathedral, and several interesting museums. Girona’s cathedral, perched uphill from the river, is visible from many points in the city. After strolling through the old town, you come to a wide stairway leading up to the cathedral. The cathedral features a beautiful baroque façade and inside it has the widest Gothic nave in Europe. The cathedral is part of the town's historic and archaeological walk, which runs along the old town, mostly atop the city's ancient ramparts. The church of Sant Feliu is the second most important church in Girona, just a few steps away from the Cathedral. This church is a blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles and is dedicated to Saint Feliu, a Catalan saint and martyr. Near the cathedral, you’ll find the Arabic Baths, an imitation of medieval Muslim baths. As a university centre, Girona combines a rich past with a vibrant present: art galleries, trendy cafés, and a lively nightlife. It is also a perfect base to explore the surrounding region. It sits just outside the Pyrenees Mountains and is in close proximity to the beaches of the Costa Brava. It truly is a beautiful part of Catalonia that should be on everyone's itinerary.
